Anton Melik

Anton Melik was a Slovene geographer, born on January 1, 1890, in Črna Vas, Carniola, part of Austria-Hungary. He studied at the University of Vienna, graduating in 1916 with a degree in history and geography. Melik became an associate professor at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Ljubljana in 1926, a senior lecturer in 1932, and a professor in 1938. He was known for his work in geomorphology and established a well-known geomorphological school. His monumental work 'Geografija Slovenije' (The Geography of Slovenia) was published in two volumes in 1935-1936, later extended with four additional books. Melik served as head of the Department of Geography at the Faculty of Arts and head of the Geographical Institute of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts. He was also chancellor of the University of Ljubljana and served twice as dean of the Faculty of Arts. He passed away on June 8, 1966, in Ljubljana.
