Ivan Vurnik

Ivan Vurnik was a Slovene architect who played a pivotal role in the development of the Ljubljana School of Architecture. Born in Radovljica, he studied architecture at the Vienna University of Technology, graduating summa cum laude. His early work was influenced by Slovene folk art and the Vienna Secession style. Later, he embraced functionalism, contributing significantly to urban planning in Slovenia. Vurnik's legacy includes numerous architectural designs, most notably the Cooperative Business Bank Building in Ljubljana, adorned with a facade by his wife, Helena. His influence extended into education, where he helped establish the Department of Architecture at the University of Ljubljana. Vurnik's work remains a testament to his search for a Slovene National Style and his commitment to functionalist principles in architecture.
