Carmen Salinas

Carmen Salinas was a versatile and prolific performer who started her career as a child in the 1950s, singing and doing impersonations on the radio, competing in beauty contests and performing in nightclubs. She made her television debut in 1964 under the direction of Ernesto Alonso, appearing in such shows as La vecindad, La frontera and El chofer. She also appeared in plays, more than 110 movies, and 30 plus television shows. She worked alongside actors and producers including Denzel Washington (in Man on Fire) and Juan Osorio. Salinas' other successful projects included her touring musical Aventurera, which she produced and starred in for more than 20 years. In addition to her storied acting career, Salinas was also active in politics, as a member of Mexico's Institutional Revolutionary Party. She was elected plurinominal federal deputy in 2015, holding office until 2018. Salinas was known for her charisma, humor, and social commitment. She was honored with several awards and recognitions, such as the Ariel Award, the TVyNovelas Award, and the Premio ACE. She was also nominated for a Latin Grammy Award for her album A mi manera in 2004. Salinas died on December 9, 2021, at the age of 82 in Mexico City, after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage in November that left her in a coma. She is survived by her daughter Maria Eugenia and her grandchildren. She was mourned by her fans, colleagues, and friends, who remembered her as a legend of Mexican entertainment.
