Maria Luisa Puga

María Luisa Puga was a Mexican writer and essayist who won the Xavier Villaurrutia Award in 1983 for her novel Pánico o peligro. She was born in Mexico City and spent her childhood in Acapulco and Mazatlán. She traveled to Europe and Africa in her twenties and returned to Mexico to pursue her literary career. She published several novels, short stories, and essays that explored the social and psychological aspects of Mexican history and culture. She also collaborated with newspapers and magazines such as El Universal, La Jornada, and Unomásuno. She lived in Zirahuén, Michoacán, where she coordinated literary workshops. She died of liver cancer in 2004. Her personal and literary diaries were donated to the University of Texas at Austin in 2016.
