About me / Bio:
Festus Okotie-Eboh was born to an Itsekiri chief and an Urhobo woman in Warri Division, a town along the Benin River in Niger Delta. He attended Sapele Baptist School and worked as a teacher, clerk, and accountant before becoming a successful businessman in rubber, cement, and shoe industries. He also founded several schools in Sapele, including Zik's College of Commerce named after his friend and colleague Nnamdi Azikiwe, the first president of Nigeria. He joined the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons (NCNC) party and became its national treasurer. He was elected to the Western Region House of Assembly in 1951 and served as the federal minister of labour and social welfare from 1955 to 1957. He then became the first federal minister of finance from 1957 to 1966, during the administration of Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, the first prime minister of Nigeria. He was responsible for the establishment of the Nigerian Central Bank and the introduction of the national currency, the naira. He was also known for his flamboyant style and colorful attire, which reflected his Itsekiri culture. He was married to Victoria Okotie-Eboh and had 14 children from their and other relationships. He was assassinated along with Balewa and other prominent leaders during the 1966 Nigerian coup d'etat. He was 53 years old at the time of his death and was buried in Lagos. He is regarded as one of the founding fathers of the Republic of Nigeria and a pioneer of economic development in the country.
