About me / Bio:

Philip Effiong was a Nigerian military officer who was the first Vice President and the second and last President of the Republic of Biafra during the Nigerian Civil War from 1967 to 1970. He was Nigeria's first Director of Ordnance and became Chief of General Staff of Biafra under Head of State, Odumegwu Ojukwu. When Biafra's military resistance collapsed, Ojukwu fled to Côte d'Ivoire and Effiong became acting Head of State of Biafra on 8 January 1970. He announced the surrender of Biafra to the Federal Military Government of Nigeria on 12 January 1970, ending the war. He was detained for a few years after the war and later pardoned by the Nigerian government. He retired from the military and became a businessman and a lecturer. He also wrote a book titled Nigeria and Biafra: My Story, which was published in 2000. He died on 6 November 2003 at the age of 77. He is regarded as a hero by many Biafrans and Nigerians for his role in ending the war and preventing further bloodshed.
