Francisco Andrade

Francisco d'Andrade was a Portuguese opera singer who had a distinguished career in Europe, especially in Germany. He was considered a very elegant and cultured singer, and was particularly admired for his portrayal of the title role in Mozart's Don Giovanni. He sang leading roles in opera houses such as the Royal Italian Opera in London, the Berlin Hofoper, and the Salzburg Festival. He also created the role of Adaour in the world premiere of Alfredo Keil's Donna Bianca in Lisbon. He was a friend of the painter Max Slevogt, who made several portraits of him in his Don Giovanni costume. He retired from the stage in 1919 and died two years later in Berlin from pneumonia. He was buried in the Friedhof Wilmersdorf, where his grave is marked by a bust made by the sculptor Georg Kolbe.
