About me / Bio:
Victoria Louise was the only daughter and the last child of Wilhelm II, German Emperor, and Augusta Victoria of Schleswig-Holstein. She was a great-granddaughter of both German Emperor Wilhelm I and Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom. Her 1913 wedding to Prince Ernest Augustus of Hanover was the largest gathering of reigning monarchs in Germany since German unification in 1871, and one of the last great social events of European royalty before the First World War began fourteen months later. Shortly after the wedding, Victoria Louise became the Duchess of Brunswick by marriage. She was a popular and influential figure in Germany and abroad, known for her charm, intelligence, and artistic talent. She was also a patron of several charities and cultural institutions, such as the Red Cross and the Berlin State Opera. She maintained a close relationship with her father throughout his exile in the Netherlands after the war, and often visited him until his death in 1941. She also reconciled with her brother Crown Prince Wilhelm and supported his claim to the German throne. She lived to see the restoration of the monarchy in Greece through her daughter Frederica, who became Queen Consort in 1947. She died in 1980 at the age of 88, having outlived all her siblings and most of her children. She was buried next to her husband in the Berggarten Mausoleum in Hanover.
