Nadir Afonso was a Portuguese painter and architect who was a pioneer of kinetic art and geometric abstraction. He studied architecture in Porto and Paris, and worked with Le Corbusier and Oscar Niemeyer. He also developed his own theory of aesthetics, based on the idea that art is objective and ruled by laws of perception and form. He created many series of paintings, such as the Cities series, which depict places around the world in a stylized and geometric way. He received many honors and awards, such as the Order of St. James of the Sword and the Portuguese Academy of Fine Arts. He died in 2013 at the age of 93.
