Antonio Lopes Ribeiro

António Lopes Ribeiro was a Portuguese film director, producer, critic, journalist, and television personality. He started his career as a film critic at the age of 17, and founded several magazines dedicated to cinema. He made his debut as a director with the documentary Bailando ao Sol (1928). He directed more than 50 films, ranging from fiction to propaganda, and was considered the "filmmaker of the regime" for his support of the Estado Novo dictatorship. He was also the founder of the production company Produções Lopes Ribeiro in 1941. He was the older brother of the actor Ribeirinho, and was married twice. He died in Lisbon in 1995, two days before his 87th birthday.
