Eugenio de Andrade

Eugénio de Andrade was the pseudonym of José Fontinhas, one of the most prominent Portuguese poets of the 20th century. His poetry, characterized by a lyrical and playful style, explored themes such as love, nature, childhood, and the body. He was also a prolific translator of poets such as Emily Dickinson, Federico García Lorca, Jorge Luis Borges, and Rainer Maria Rilke. He worked as a public servant for the Ministry of Health for 35 years, and lived in Porto since 1950. He received several awards and honors, such as the Camões Prize, the Queen Sofia Prize of Ibero-American Poetry, the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit, and the Gold Medal of the city of Porto. He died of heart failure on June 13, 2005, at the age of 82.
