Paul Constantinescu was a Romanian composer born on June 30, 1909, in Ploiești, Romania. He was known for his works that often incorporated Romanian folk music and Byzantine chant. Constantinescu studied at the Bucharest Conservatory and later in Vienna. His teaching career included positions at the Academy for Religious Music and the Bucharest Conservatory. He was awarded the Enescu prize in 1932 and the Romanian Academy prize in 1956. His compositions include operas, symphonies, and chamber music, reflecting a strong command of form and modal harmony. Constantinescu passed away on December 20, 1963, leaving behind a legacy that significantly influenced the post-Enescu generation of Romanian nationalist composers.
