Ghulam Haider Hamidi was a prominent Afghan politician and a former deputy minister of higher education under the Taliban regime. He was one of the four ex-Taliban leaders who accepted the reconciliation offer from the Afghan government and was appointed as the mayor of Kandahar in 2007 by President Hamid Karzai. He worked closely with the US and other international forces to improve the governance and security of Kandahar, the second largest city in Afghanistan and a stronghold of the Taliban insurgency. He also initiated several development projects, such as building roads, schools, and parks. He faced many challenges and threats from the Taliban, corrupt officials, and tribal rivalries. He survived a bomb attack on his car in 2009, but was killed by a suicide bomber who hid explosives inside his turban on July 27, 2011, at the age of 66. He was widely respected and mourned by the people of Kandahar and the international community. He was described as a brave, honest, and dedicated leader who served his country with dignity and courage.
