Nestor Mesta Chayres

Nestor Mesta Chayres was an acclaimed tenor in Mexico and a noted interpreter of Spanish songs, boleros and Mexican romantic music on the international concert stage. He was widely commended for his artistic renditions of the works of Agustín Lara and María Grever and was nicknamed "El Gitano de México". He began his musical studies in his hometown and later received a scholarship to the National Conservatory of Music in Mexico City. He made his professional debut in 1929 and soon achieved success on the radio and in various theaters. He also toured extensively in Cuba, the United States, Europe and Latin America. He collaborated with renowned orchestras and conductors such as Andre Kostelanetz, Alfredo Antonini and John Serry Sr. He recorded many songs in different languages and genres, ranging from opera arias to boleros and waltzes. He died of a heart attack in 1971 at the age of 63.
