Silvestre Revueltas

Silvestre Revueltas was a Mexican composer, teacher, and violinist, best known for his colourfully orchestrated music of distinctive rhythmic vitality. He was part of a family of prominent artists, including his brother José Revueltas, a novelist and activist, and his nephew Román Revueltas Retes, a violinist and painter. He studied violin and composition in Mexico City, Austin, Texas, and Chicago, where he graduated with honors. He performed as a violinist in various orchestras and ensembles, and became the assistant conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra of Mexico in 1929. He composed several symphonic poems, chamber works, songs, and film scores, inspired by Mexican folk music and revolutionary themes. He also supported leftist causes and participated in the Spanish Civil War as part of a cultural delegation. He struggled with poverty and alcoholism, and died of pneumonia at the age of 40. His music is widely regarded as one of the most original and influential contributions to Mexican musical nationalism.
