Józef Oleksy was a Polish left-wing politician and economist who served as Prime Minister of Poland from 1995 to 1996, when he resigned due to espionage allegations. He was also the leader of the Democratic Left Alliance and the Social Democracy of the Republic of Poland, as well as the Marshal of the Sejm twice. He was involved in the round table talks between the communist government and the Solidarity movement in 1989, which led to the peaceful transition to democracy in Poland. He was accused of being a Soviet spy by the Internal Security Agency in 1995, but the charges were later dropped due to lack of evidence. He remained active in politics until his death from cancer in 2015. He was regarded as a pragmatic and moderate politician who sought dialogue and compromise with different political forces.
