About me / Bio:
Roman Aftanazy was a Polish historian, librarian and author of a monumental work of reference, Dzieje rezydencji na dawnych kresach Rzeczypospolitej - History of Residences in Poland's Former Eastern Borderlands, (1991–1997), listing and describing the cultural heritage contained in the myriad estates and grand residences in the once Polish Kresy and Inflanty regions. He was born in Morszyn, a spa town in what is now the Lviv Oblast of today's Ukraine, and studied history at the Jan Kazimierz University in Lwów. His formal studies were interrupted by the outbreak of World War II, but he continued a programme of covert studies under the auspices of the underground University of Lwow and completed his degree in 1942. He worked as a librarian at the National Ossolineum Institute in Lwów, where he participated in the transfer and safeguarding of the collections during the war and the Soviet occupation. He was arrested and interrogated by the NKVD in 1945, but was released after a few months. He moved to Wrocław in 1946, where he worked at the University Library and the Ossolineum. He was a prolific researcher and writer, publishing over 300 works on various topics of Polish history, art and culture, especially related to the former eastern borderlands. His magnum opus, Dzieje rezydencji na dawnych kresach Rzeczypospolitej, consists of 11 volumes and covers over 2000 residences in the regions that were once part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. He received many awards and honors for his contributions to Polish culture and scholarship, including the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland and the Order of Polonia Restituta. He died in Wrocław in 2004 and was buried at the Powązki Cemetery in Warsaw.
