wladyslaw Komar

Władysław Komar was a Polish shot putter, actor and cabaretist. He started his sports career as a boxer, but later switched to athletics. He competed in three Summer Olympics between 1964 and 1972, and won the gold medal at the Munich Games in 1972 with a throw of 21.18 metres. He also won two bronze medals at the European Championships and five at the European Indoor Championships. He set 16 national records and his personal bests were 21.19 metres outdoors and 20.32 metres indoors. He was nicknamed "King Kong" Komar by the media. After retiring from sports, he pursued a career in entertainment. He appeared in several films, such as Kazimierz Wielki, W biegu, and Borys Godunow. He also performed in theatre and cabaret, often with Tadeusz Drozda. He co-authored a book titled "Alfabet Władysława Komara. Sportowcy, artyści, prominenci". He died in a car accident in 1998 at the age of 58. He was buried at the Powązki Cemetery in Warsaw. He was married to Maria Komar and had two children, Władysław Jr. and Anna.
