Zuzu Angel

Zuzu Angel was a Brazilian-American fashion designer, who became famous for opposing the Brazilian military dictatorship after the forced disappearance of her son, Stuart, who was a member of a left-wing urban guerrilla group. She used her clothing collections as a way of expressing her protest and raising awareness of the human rights violations committed by the regime. She also wrote letters to international authorities and celebrities, such as Henry Kissinger and Edward Kennedy, denouncing the torture and death of her son and other political prisoners. She died in a car accident in 1976, which was officially reported as a result of exhaustion, but later revealed to be a murder orchestrated by the security agents of the dictatorship.
