Clara Nunes was a Brazilian samba and MPB singer, considered one of the greatest of her generation. She was born in Paraopea in 1942 and orphaned at a young age. She moved to Belo Horizonte at 16 and sang in local church choirs. She won the national contest A Voz de Ouro ABC in 1960 and moved to Rio de Janeiro in 1965. She signed with Odeon Records and released her debut album A Voz Adorável de Clara Nunes. Her first commercial hit came in 1968 with Ataulfo Alves' song "Você passa e Eu Acho Graça". She sold over a million copies of each album she released and had many hits such as "Conto de areia", "O mar serenou", "Coração leviano", "Na linha do mar", "Morena de Angola", and "Nação". She also recorded several songs for the Portela samba school's carnival theme. She converted to Candomblé in her later life and displayed her religious devotion through her white costumes and jewelry. She died in 1983 from complications following surgery for varicose veins. Her legacy lives on as one of the most popular singers in Brazil.
