Adib Jatene was a renowned Brazilian physician of Lebanese background, university professor, scientist and thoracic surgeon. He is remembered as the inventor of the arterial switch operation, a surgical technique to correct transposition of the great vessels in the newborn, and the first artificial heart-lung machine in Brazil. He was also one of the founders of the University of São Paulo Heart Institute and a two-time minister of health of Brazil. He was a member of the Brazilian Academy of Medicine and published over 270 scientific papers. He received many awards and honors for his contributions to medicine and public health, such as the Order of Merit Military and the Order of Merit Aeronautical. He died of a heart attack in São Paulo, Brazil, at the age of 85.
