Chica Xavier was born in 1932, in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. She was the daughter of a Chilean diplomat and a Brazilian mother. She moved to Rio de Janeiro when she was four years old. She studied at the drama school O Tablado before her film debut in 1919, in Urutau. She participated in several films, such as A Carne, Melle Cinema, Sangue Mineiro, Onde a Terra Acaba and Inconfidência Mineira. She founded her own film studio Brasil Vita Filmes in 1930, where she produced, directed and starred in many films. She was one of the first women to direct films in Brazil, and one of the most influential figures in the Brazilian film industry. She faced many difficulties and challenges, such as censorship, financial problems, technical issues and personal conflicts. She died in 2020, at the age of 88, of natural causes. She was cremated and her ashes were scattered in the sea, as she wished.
