About me / Bio:
Paulo Freire was a Brazilian educator and philosopher who advocated for critical pedagogy. He wrote the influential book Pedagogy of the Oppressed, which criticized the oppression of the poor and the dominance of the bourgeoisie in education. He also influenced many other thinkers and movements in social, political, and educational fields. He was born on September 19, 1921, in Recife, a city in northeastern Brazil. He came from a middle-class family that suffered economic hardships during the Great Depression. He experienced poverty and hunger and understood the difficulties of the illiterate masses. He enrolled in law school in 1943, but never practiced law. Instead, he became involved in adult education and literacy programs. He developed a new method of teaching that emphasized dialogue, problem-solving, and critical consciousness. He believed that education should be a tool for liberation and social transformation. He applied his method in various projects, such as the Movement of Popular Culture in Recife and the National Literacy Program in Brasília. He gained international recognition and was invited to work as a consultant in several countries, such as Chile, Guinea-Bissau, and Angola. He also taught at Harvard University and the University of Geneva. He wrote many books and articles on education, culture, politics, and ethics. Some of his most notable works are Education as the Practice of Freedom, Cultural Action for Freedom, Pedagogy of Hope, and Pedagogy of the Heart. He died on May 2, 1997, in São Paulo, due to heart failure. He was 75 years old. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential educators of the 20th century. He received many honors and awards, such as the UNESCO Prize for Peace Education, the King Baudouin International Development Prize, and the Order of Rio Branco. He also inspired the creation of the Paulo Freire Institute, which promotes his legacy and vision in various countries.
