Sergio Vieira de Mello

Sérgio Vieira de Mello was a Brazilian diplomat who dedicated his life and career to the United Nations. He worked on several humanitarian and political missions in various countries, such as Bangladesh, Sudan, Cyprus, Mozambique, Peru, Lebanon, Cambodia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, East Timor, and Iraq. He was known for his intellect, charisma, and ability to negotiate and build trust among different parties. He was also a champion of human rights and democracy, and advocated for the restoration of sovereignty and dignity to the people affected by war and oppression. He was appointed as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in 2002, and as the Special Representative of the Secretary-General to Iraq in 2003. He was killed in a terrorist attack on the UN headquarters in Baghdad, along with 20 other staff members. He was widely mourned and honored by the international community, and considered a potential candidate for the UN Secretary-General position. He was posthumously awarded the Sergio Vieira de Mello Medal by the Brazilian government, and several foundations and awards were established in his name to continue his work and vision.
