José Lutzenberger (1926-2002) was a Brazilian agronomist who worked for 15 years with a multinational chemical corporation but left in 1970 to start a vigorous and successful campaign against pesticides and for organic farming. He founded the Associação Gaúcha de Proteção ao Ambiente Natural (Agapan), one of the first environmentalist organizations in Brazil, and became a prominent leader of the ecological movement. He also founded the Gaia Foundation, which focused on global issues, and received the Right Livelihood Award in 1988 for his contribution to protecting the natural environment in Brazil and worldwide. He was appointed as the Secretary of Environment in the federal government of Fernando Collor de Mello in 1990, but resigned in 1992 after disagreements with the president. He continued his activism until his death, defending the Amazon rainforest, the indigenous peoples, and the sustainable development. He was buried as he wished, naked and without a coffin, near a tree in a farm he restored, the Rincão Gaia in Pantano Grande, Rio Grande do Sul.
