Paul Hausser was a German general and a high-ranking commander in the Waffen-SS, the armed wing of the Nazi SS. He served in the Prussian Army during World War I and became a leader of a right-wing veterans' organization in the interwar period. He joined the SS in 1934 and was instrumental in forming the Waffen-SS as a military force. He commanded several SS divisions and corps in World War II, fighting on the Eastern and Western fronts. He was wounded twice and received several awards, including the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords. After the war, he was tried by a French military court and sentenced to life imprisonment, but was released in 1954. He became a founding member and the first spokesperson of HIAG, a lobby group and a revisionist veterans' organization that aimed to restore the legal and economic rights of the Waffen-SS and to rewrite its history. He wrote two books that defended the Waffen-SS as a purely military force that had no involvement in war crimes or Nazi atrocities. He died in 1972 at the age of 92.
