Erich Priebke

Erich Priebke was a German SS commander and Gestapo officer who participated in the Nazi regime during World War II. He was involved in the Ardeatine massacre in Rome on 24 March 1944, in which 335 Italian civilians were killed in retaliation for a partisan attack that killed 33 German soldiers. He was one of the men held responsible for this mass execution and personally shot two of the victims. After the war, he escaped from a British prisoner-of-war camp in Italy and fled to Argentina with a Vatican travel document. He lived there for almost 50 years, working as a school teacher and hiding his past. In 1994, he was tracked down by American journalists and admitted his role in the massacre. This led to his extradition to Italy and a trial that lasted more than four years. He was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1998, but was allowed to serve his sentence under house arrest due to his old age and poor health. He never expressed any remorse for his actions and denied the Holocaust. He died in 2013 at the age of 100.
