About me / Bio:
F. W. Murnau was one of the most influential German film directors of the silent era, and a prominent figure in the expressionist movement in German cinema during the 1920s. He was born as Friedrich Wilhelm Plumpe in Bielefeld, Germany, and studied philosophy, art history, and literature at the Universities of Heidelberg and Berlin. He joined the company of Max Reinhardt, a famous theatre director, and began his career as an actor and assistant director. He also served in the German Army during World War I as an infantry officer and later as a pilot. Murnau made his directorial debut in 1919 with The Boy in Blue, a drama based on a painting by Thomas Gainsborough. He gained international recognition with his 1922 film Nosferatu, an adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula, which is considered a masterpiece of German Expressionist cinema and an early cult film. He followed this with other acclaimed films such as The Last Laugh (1924), Faust (1926), and Sunrise (1927), which won three Oscars at the first Academy Awards ceremony. Murnau was known for his innovative use of camera techniques, lighting, editing, and storytelling to create atmospheric and emotional effects. Murnau moved to Hollywood in 1926 and signed a contract with Fox Film Corporation. He made three films for Fox: Sunrise (1927), 4 Devils (1928), and City Girl (1930). However, he faced creative differences with the studio executives and was unhappy with the interference of sound in his films. He decided to leave Fox and collaborate with Robert J. Flaherty, a documentary filmmaker, on a project in Tahiti. The result was Tabu (1931), a romantic drama about two lovers who defy the taboos of their society. The film was well received by critics and audiences, but Murnau did not live to see its success. He died in a car accident on March 11, 1931, at the age of 42. He was buried in Stahnsdorf South-Western Cemetery near Berlin. Murnau is regarded as one of the greatest filmmakers of all time and a pioneer of cinematic expressionism. His films have influenced many directors such as Alfred Hitchcock, Orson Welles, Ingmar Bergman, Werner Herzog, Francis Ford Coppola, and Martin Scorsese. He has also been honored with several awards and tributes, such as a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, a retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and a film festival named after him in Bielefeld.
