Emiliano Zapata

Emiliano Zapata was a Mexican revolutionary who fought for the rights of the peasants and indigenous people of Morelos. He was a champion of agrarian reform and a symbol of resistance against the oppressive regimes of Porfirio Díaz, Francisco Madero, Victoriano Huerta, and Venustiano Carranza. He led the Liberation Army of the South, a guerrilla force that controlled most of Morelos and parts of other states. He also formed alliances with other revolutionary leaders, such as Francisco Villa and Ricardo Flores Magón. He promulgated the Plan de Ayala in 1911, which called for the redistribution of land from the large haciendas to the ejidos, the communal lands of the peasants. He also advocated for democracy, social justice, and indigenous autonomy. He was betrayed and assassinated by government troops in 1919, but his legacy lives on in the Zapatismo movement, which seeks to uphold his ideals and principles.
