Edgar Papu was a Romanian literary scholar and professor, notable for coining the term protochronism in 1974. He was born in Bucharest and pursued an extensive education in literature and philosophy. His academic journey took him through Vienna and Florence, culminating in a doctorate with a thesis on open forms in art. Papu's career was marked by his contributions to literary criticism and theory, with works such as 'Barocul ca tip de existență' (Baroque as a Type of Existence). Despite facing political imprisonment during the Ceaucescu regime, he continued to influence Romanian literary thought and was posthumously elected as a member of the Romanian Academy in 2006.
