George Georgescu

George Georgescu was a Romanian conductor, born on September 12, 1887, in Sulina, Tulcea County, Romania. He was the moving force behind the Bucharest Philharmonic Orchestra for decades, beginning shortly after World War I. A protégé of Artur Nikisch and a close associate of George Enescu, he received honors from the French and communist Romanian governments and lived to make recordings in the stereo era. His talent for music showed very early in his childhood, and despite his father's initial opposition, he pursued a career in music, which led him to study at the Bucharest Conservatory and later in Berlin. His professional career began as a cellist, but he soon found his true calling as a conductor, leading to a distinguished career that left a lasting impact on the world of classical music.
