Nguyen Xuan Oanh

Nguyễn Xuân Oánh was a prominent Vietnamese economist and politician who played a significant role in the economic development of Vietnam. He was born on July 14, 1921, in Phủ Lạng Thương, Tonkin, French Indochina. His father, Nguyễn Xuân Bái, was also a notable figure. Oánh's education was extensive; he studied in France and Japan before earning his PhD in Economics from Harvard University. His career was marked by significant contributions to both South Vietnam and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, holding positions such as Economic Advisor to the Prime Minister and Member of the National Assembly. He was known for his efforts to reform Vietnam's economy during the Đổi Mới period, advocating for policies that led to the country's transition from a planned economy to a market-oriented one. Oánh passed away on August 29, 2003, in Ho Chi Minh City, leaving behind a legacy of economic thought and policy that continues to influence Vietnam's development.
