Joseph Arthur Gosnell Sr.

Joseph Arthur Gosnell Sr., a respected Nisga'a tribal leader, was instrumental in leading his people towards self-government and land ownership. Born in Arrandale Cannery, he grew up in New Aiyansh and was educated at St. Michael's Residential School. He worked as a fisherman before becoming active in the Native Brotherhood of British Columbia and the Pacific Salmon Commission. Elected President of the Nisga'a Tribal Council in 1992, he played a key role in the historic Nisga'a Treaty negotiations, resulting in the first modern treaty in Canada. He later became President of the Nisga'a Lisms government and was a fluent speaker of the Nisga'a language. His leadership and vision earned him several honorary degrees and prestigious awards, including the Order of Canada.
