Anthony Barringer

Anthony R. Barringer was a Canadian-American inventor and geophysicist who made numerous contributions to mineral exploration technology. He was born in London, England, on October 20, 1925. He graduated with a BSc and PhD from the Royal School of Mines in London. He moved to Canada in 1954 and worked as a geologist for Selco Exploration. He invented the Induced Pulse Transient (INPUT) system, which used electromagnetic pulses to detect conductive rocks and ore deposits. He founded Barringer Research Inc. in 1961 and licensed the INPUT system to major mining and oil companies around the world. He also developed other geophysical instruments and techniques, such as FLUOROSCAN, COSPEC, GASPEC, E-phase, and Radiophase. He moved to the United States in 1977 and became a citizen. He wrote over 80 technical papers and received more than 70 patents. He received many awards and honors for his achievements, such as the Logan Medal, the Virgil Kauffman Gold Medal, the Daniel C. Jackling Award, the Maurice Ewing Medal, and the Order of Canada. He died of natural causes in Golden, Colorado, on August 15, 2009, at the age of 83. He is widely regarded as a pioneer and a leader in the field of geophysics.
