About me / Bio:
Roy Brown was a Canadian flying ace who was credited with ten aerial victories, including Manfred von Richthofen, the famous "Red Baron". He was born in Carleton Place, Ontario, Canada in 1893. He attended the Royal Military College of Canada and joined the Royal Naval Air Service in 1915. He flew anti-submarine and convoy patrols from Nova Scotia and then joined No. 9 Squadron RNAS in Britain. In 1917, he was sent to France to fly Sopwith Pups and Camels. He soon proved his skill and courage in aerial combat, earning the nickname "Brownie". He was awarded the Military Cross for his first five victories and the Distinguished Service Order for his next 16. On 21 April 1918, he engaged in a dogfight with the Red Baron and fired at him before he was killed by a bullet from the ground. The Royal Air Force officially credited Brown with the kill, although historians have debated the exact circumstances of the Red Baron's death. He was also awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest military honour in the British Empire, for his overall achievements. He was promoted to captain and given command of No. 209 Squadron RAF. He continued to fly until the end of the war, when he returned to Canada as a national hero. He wrote a memoir titled With the Flying Circus and a book of anecdotes called Flying Fur. After the war, he worked as an accountant, a businessman, and a civil aviation pioneer. He founded a small airline and was the editor of Canadian Aviation. He also served as a consultant for the Royal Canadian Air Force and the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. He died of heart failure in 1944 and was buried in his hometown of Stouffville. He was honoured by the Canadian government with a commemorative stamp in 1968 and by the Canadian Aviation Hall of Fame in 1974.
