James Sewid, also known by his Kwakwaka'wakw name Poogleedee, was a prominent figure in the Kwakwaka'wakw community of British Columbia. Born in Alert Bay, he became a fisherman, author, and the first elected Chief councillor of the Kwakwaka'wakw at Alert Bay. His autobiography, 'Guests Never Leave Hungry,' published in 1969, recounts his life and the cultural heritage of his people. Sewid played a significant role in the revival of the potlatch among the Kwakwaka'wakw and was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1971 for his contributions to the welfare of his people and for fostering an appreciation of their cultural heritage. His legacy continues to influence the preservation and celebration of Kwakwaka'wakw culture.
