About me / Bio:
George-Étienne Cartier was a prominent Canadian statesman and a key figure in the confederation of Canada. Born on September 6, 1814, in Saint-Antoine-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, he was a lawyer by profession and early in his career, he was inspired by Louis-Joseph Papineau and took part in the Lower Canada Rebellion. After a period of exile, he returned to Montreal and entered politics in 1848. He played a significant role in the creation of the Civil Code of Lower Canada and was a staunch advocate for the confederation, fearing American expansion. Cartier died on May 20, 1873, in London, England, and is remembered as one of the Fathers of Confederation.
