About me / Bio:
Henry Ruttan was born on June 12, 1792, in Adolphustown, Ontario, Canada. He was one of six children of United Empire Loyalists of French ancestry. He lost both his parents when he was nine years old and was raised by his grandmother and uncle. He showed an interest in inventions and mechanics from an early age. He left school at 14 to work in a store in Kingston. He joined the militia and served in the War of 1812, where he was wounded at Lundy's Lane. He continued to serve in the militia until 1846, reaching the rank of colonel. He also served again from 1860 to 1862, commanding the 4th Military District. He moved to Cobourg in 1815 and started his own business. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Upper Canada in 1820, representing Northumberland. He served until 1824 and was reelected in 1836. He was the speaker of the house from December 1837 to January 1838. He was influential in initiating the Trent Canal project. He was appointed sheriff of the Newcastle District in 1827 and held that office until 1857. He also served on the Board of Agriculture for Upper Canada. He wrote an autobiography in 1861, which covered his family history and his experiences in war and politics. He also wrote a book called The New Era, in which he proposed solutions for world economic problems. He was interested in the problems of heating and ventilation of buildings and invented several devices for that purpose. He patented seven inventions between 1846 and 1858, including air heaters, ventilators, and a system for heating and cooling railway coaches. His inventions were widely used in various industries and buildings, such as the Parliament of Canada. He died on July 31, 1871, in Cobourg, Ontario, at the age of 79. He was buried at the Union Cemetery. He was inducted into the Canadian Science and Engineering Hall of Fame in 1997. He is regarded as one of the most influential Canadian inventors and politicians of the 19th century.
