About me / Bio:
Ivan Fyodorovich Paskevich was a prominent Russian military leader and administrator who served under three emperors: Alexander I, Nicholas I, and Alexander II. He began his career as an officer in the Napoleonic wars, fighting in the battles of Austerlitz, Borodino, and Paris. He rose to the rank of general and became one of the closest associates of Nicholas I. He was sent to the Caucasus in 1827, where he successfully fought against the Persians and the Turks, capturing Erivan, Kars, and Adrianople. He was rewarded with the title of Count of Erivan and the Order of St. George. He was then transferred to Poland in 1831, where he crushed the November uprising and became the viceroy of the Congress Kingdom of Poland. He ruled Poland with an iron fist, enforcing Russification and suppressing any signs of nationalism. He was also given the title of Prince of Warsaw and the Order of St. Andrew. He later participated in the suppression of the Hungarian Revolution of 1848, leading the Russian troops that invaded Hungary and defeated the rebels. He also took part in the Crimean War, but fell ill during the siege of Silistra and had to retire from active service. He died in Warsaw in 1856 and was buried in the Powązki Cemetery. He was regarded as one of the most capable and loyal commanders of the Russian Empire, but also as a ruthless and oppressive ruler of Poland.
