Adam Asnyk

Adam Asnyk was born in Kalisz to a noble family. He studied agriculture, medicine, and philosophy in various universities in Poland and abroad. He participated in the January Uprising against the Russian rule in 1863 and became a member of the National Government. He later settled in Kraków, where he worked as a journalist, city councilor, and member of the Galician Diet. He was also a prominent cultural figure, involved in bringing the ashes of Adam Mickiewicz to Poland and founding the Society of Popular Schools. He wrote poems and plays that expressed his positivist views and his love for the Polish mountains. He died of heart failure in 1897 and was buried at the Skałka church, a resting place for some of the most distinguished Poles.
