Józef Piłsudski

Slogan
To be a Pole means to be the last barrier of Europe against the East.
About me / Bio:
Józef Piłsudski was a Polish revolutionary and statesman who played a key role in the restoration of Poland's sovereignty after World War I. He was a socialist activist in his youth and was exiled to Siberia for his involvement in a plot to assassinate the tsar. He later formed the Polish Legions, a military force that fought alongside the Central Powers in World War I, hoping to gain Poland's independence from Russia. After the war, he became the first Chief of State of the newly established Second Polish Republic and later the first Marshal of Poland, the highest military rank in the country. He led Poland in the Polish-Soviet War of 1919-1921, which resulted in the preservation of Poland's eastern borders and the defeat of the communist forces. He also initiated several social and economic reforms, such as land reform, universal suffrage, and the creation of a national currency. He retired from active politics in 1922, but returned to power in 1926 after a coup d'état that overthrew the parliamentary government. He rejected the offer of the presidency, but remained the de facto leader of Poland until his death in 1935. He was a controversial figure, admired by many for his patriotism and charisma, but criticized by others for his authoritarian tendencies and disregard for the constitution. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in Polish history and a national hero.
