Janusz Sidlo

Janusz Sidło was a Polish javelin thrower who competed in five Olympic Games from 1952 to 1968. He won the silver medal in 1956, when he set a world record of 83.66 m in Milan, but then lent his javelin to his friend Egil Danielsen from Norway, who threw 85.71 m and won the gold medal. Sidło also won two European championships in 1954 and 1958, and a bronze medal in 1969. He was the first European to throw over 80 m. He was awarded the Officer's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta and later the Knight's Cross. He was voted the Polish Sportspersonality of the Year in 1954 and 1955. He retired from athletics in 1973 and worked as a coach and a journalist. He died of a heart attack in 1993 at the age of 60.
