Zdzislaw Jachimecki

Zdzisław Jachimecki was a Polish musicologist, composer, and academic. He studied music theory in Lwów and musicology in Vienna, where he also took lessons from Arnold Schönberg. He obtained his doctorate and habilitation from the Jagiellonian University in Kraków, where he became a professor and the head of the Department of History and Theory of Music. He lectured at various universities in Europe and collaborated with many journals and radio stations. He was arrested by the Nazis in 1939 and imprisoned in Sachsenhausen, but later released and continued his work in secret. After the war, he resumed his academic duties and became a member of the Polish Academy of Learning. He wrote extensively on Polish and European music history, especially on Chopin, Moniuszko, and Gomółka. He also composed some pieces, mostly for piano and chamber ensemble. He died in Kraków in 1953.
