Jadwiga Grabowska-Hawrylak

Jadwiga Grabowska-Hawrylak was a Polish architect who played a significant role in the reconstruction of Wrocław after World War II. She designed many housing and school buildings, as well as commercial, recreational, and religious facilities. She was the first woman to graduate from the Faculty of Architecture of the Wrocław University of Technology in 1950, and the first woman to receive the Honorary Award of the Association of Polish Architects in 1974. She was known for her modernist and brutalist style, which was influenced by Le Corbusier and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Some of her most notable works include the Scientist's House, the Grunwald Square Housing Estate, and the Millennium Memorial Church of the Diocese of Wrocław. She was also an avid quilter and a mother of three children, two of whom became architects as well. She died in 2018 at the age of 97.
