Antranig Chalabian

Antranig Chalabian was a medical illustrator, cartographer and historian, an author of several volumes on Armenian history. He is best known for his biography of General Andranik Ozanyan, a national hero of Armenia and a leader of the Armenian liberation movement. Chalabian spent many years researching and writing the book, which was published in 1984 and later translated into several languages. He also wrote other books on Armenian history, such as Revolutionary Figures, Armenia After Coming of Islam and Dro. Chalabian was born in 1922 in Kessab, a town in Syria with a large Armenian population. He graduated from the Armenian Evangelical School and studied at Aleppo College. He moved to Beirut in 1949 and worked as a medical illustrator at the American University of Beirut for 27 years. He also contributed articles to various Armenian publications and collaborated with other authors and historians. In 1977, he immigrated to Detroit, USA, where he worked as a public relations director at the AGBU Alex Manoogian School. He continued his historical research and writing until his death in 2011. He was awarded a doctorate in history from the Yerevan State University in 1989 and received numerous accolades and recognition for his work. He was also an invited contributor to Military History Magazine. He died at his home in Southfield, Michigan, at the age of 89. He was buried in his native Kessab, Syria.
