About me / Bio:
James Naismith was born on November 6, 1861, in Almonte, Ontario, Canada. He grew up on a farm and enjoyed playing outdoor games. He lost both his parents when he was nine years old and was raised by his maternal grandmother and uncle. He attended McGill University in Montreal, where he studied theology and physical education. He was also an athlete who played rugby, lacrosse, soccer, and gymnastics. He graduated in 1888 and became a physical instructor at McGill. In 1890, he moved to the United States and enrolled at the International YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts. There, he was asked by his supervisor, Luther Gulick, to create a new indoor game that could be played during the winter. Naismith came up with the idea of basketball, a game that involved shooting a soccer ball into a peach basket. He wrote the original 13 rules of basketball and organized the first game in December 1891. The game soon became popular and spread to other YMCA centers and colleges. Naismith also introduced the game to his students at the University of Kansas, where he became the first basketball coach in 1898. He also taught physical education and served as the athletic director until 1937. He was also a physician, a Christian chaplain, and a sports administrator. He helped establish the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). He also witnessed basketball become an Olympic sport in 1936. Naismith died on November 28, 1939, in Lawrence, Kansas, from a brain hemorrhage. He was 78 years old. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame, which was named after him, in 1959. He is widely regarded as the father of basketball and one of the most influential figures in sports history.
