About me / Bio:

Aktham Naisse was born in Latakia, Syria, and studied law in Egypt before returning to his home country. He was a prominent figure in the Syrian civil society movement, advocating for democratic reforms and human rights. He co-founded the Committees for the Defence of Democratic Liberties and Human Rights (CDDL-HR) in 1989, and published a newsletter called Sawt al-Dimuqratiyya (The Voice of Democracy). He was arrested several times by the Syrian authorities for his peaceful activities, and spent nine years in prison from 1991 to 1998. He was tortured and suffered a stroke that left him partially paralyzed. He continued his work after his release, leading campaigns to end the state of emergency and free political prisoners. He organized a peaceful sit-in outside the Syrian parliament in 2004, which resulted in his arrest and trial. He was released on bail and later acquitted in 2005. He received international recognition and awards for his courage and dedication, such as the Ludovic-Trarieux International Human Rights Award and the Martin Ennals Award for Human Rights Defenders. He died in Paris, France, on February 5, 2022, at the age of 70. He was a symbol of hope and resistance for many Syrians who aspire for a democratic and free society.
