Muhammad Mustafa Mero was a Syrian politician who served as Prime Minister of Syria from 2000 to 2003. He was born in Al Tall, a town near Damascus, in 1941. He joined the Ba'ath Party in 1966 and became a member of its Regional Command in 2000. He held a PhD in Arabic language and literature from Moscow State University. He served as governor of several provinces, including Daraa, Al Hasakah, and Aleppo, before becoming prime minister. He was appointed by President Hafez al-Assad shortly before his death, and was retained by his son Bashar al-Assad. He led two cabinets that focused on economic reforms and anti-corruption measures. He also improved relations with neighboring countries, such as Turkey and Iraq. He was replaced by Muhammad Naji al-Otari in 2003. He died of COVID-19 in 2020 at the age of 79.
