Nini Roll Anker was a Norwegian novelist and playwright who was born in Molde in 1873. She was the daughter of a politician and a judge, and grew up in a privileged environment. She married a landowner in 1892, but divorced him in 1907 after becoming involved in the women's rights movement and the workers' cause. She married a second time in 1910 to an engineer and sailor, and settled in Asker. She made her literary debut in 1898 under a pseudonym, and later published several novels and plays that focused on the social and psychological problems of different classes of women, as well as the struggles of the working class. She was influenced by the Norwegian new realism and the naturalist style of writing. She was also a friend and supporter of other writers and artists, such as Sigrid Undset, Ragnhild Jølsen, and Edvard Munch. She died in Asker in 1942, and was buried in Oslo.
