Kirsten Sand was a pioneer in Norwegian architecture. She was the first woman to graduate with full technical competence in architecture from the Norwegian Institute of Technology in 1919. She worked on various projects, including private homes, apartment buildings, and summer houses, mostly in the Functionalist style. She was also involved in the housing and health issues in Oslo, and participated in several exhibitions and surveys. After the Second World War, she played a key role in the reconstruction of the northern areas of Norway that were destroyed by the German forces. She designed many types of houses that suited the local needs and conditions, and became a respected figure in the region. She received the King's Medal of Merit in 1965 and became an honorary member of the National Association of Norwegian Architects in 1995. She lived until the age of 100 and left a lasting legacy in Norwegian architecture.
